Anonymous asked: I love the idea of working in a bookstore but I also love the reality of paying rent. (And of dating a person who doesn't make a lot of money.) How hopeless is it?

Anonymous, it’s not hopeless. Not hopeless at all. Or I guess it depends on how in love you are with paying rent. I do not love paying rent, so I try to pay as little as possible. But my two roommates and I—all of us parentally-unsubsidized—do just fine over in scenic West Bushwick. Do you love rent so much you want to pay $2000/month? Things might get trickier then. But mostly it’s possible. You figure it out: you eat mostly beans (beans, I’ve learned, are delicious!); nice beers are better at happy hour; you’re glad for your discounted books. For inspiration, I recommend the first chapter of Keith Gessen’s All the Sad Young Literary Men. You’ll be happy to hear it’s on our summer reading display and 10% off if you get it in the store. And, while you’re there, you can drop off a resume.
