Are you overeducated? Do you strongly relate to Woody Allen movies? Have you perfected a recipe for beef bourguignon? Are you too young to write in to the nyrb? Submit your n+1 personal ad to: interns@nplusonemag.com

You guys remember when the McNally Jackson tumblr was a tumblr devoted to posting the missed connections that showed up in the “McNally Jackson” google alert—i.e. a tumblr devoted to love? Those were the days. Now there are none! Where did they all go? To Greenlight? Anyway, n+1 interns, carry on.

Double dog dare me to email him and start suggesting names of likely candidates?

In a McNJ Missed Connection Drought

Greenlight—the beautiful new bookstore started by former McNally Jacksonite Jessica and McNJ friend Rebecca—lacks a tumblr. One wonders: Where do they post their missed connections? Answer: They do not. (Or, they do, but on facebook, which is where I saw this.) What happens when someone posts a missed connection about Greenlight then? Who sweeps in to make sure that that bookstore missed connection gets put on tumblr? When there is no one missing connections at McNally Jackson, the McNally Jackson tumblr posts missed connections from other bookstores.

Bookseller at Greenlight bookstore - m4w (Fort Greene)

I was not quite sure of the best way to initiate conversation in a bustling bookstore, but from a few quick smiles at the stacks and probably too many thank you’s at the checkout counter I am now wishing I had said more. Hopefully, you sift through this list. If so, please drop me a line if you are interested in getting a coffee and another snack.

Right now

I come back from a short vacation and Housing Works and Word are killing it, lovemongering-wise. It’s been days since I’ve gotten a missed connection in the McNally Jackson google alert. What will happen to the McNally Jackson tumblr?

From the Poets & Writers Interview with Sarah McNally
PW: What would be the highest compliment you could receive from a customer?
Sarah: I think it’s always the same, which is they found and loved books that they would never have otherwise found. Ultimately, that is my service. That can be the only service that independent bookstores provide, because we no longer are the exclusive purveyors of these things. That’s the only reason why we should exist.
PW: To put good books in the hands of people.
Sarah: Yeah. Matchmaking, you know? That’s the bookseller’s role. If we do it well, we’ll stay relevant. If we don’t do it well, we won’t.

housingworksbookstore:

“We met in line for the Ben Folds/Nick Hornby event at Housing Works Bookstore. You were super friendly and we seemed to have a bunch in common. I didn’t catch your name, and we got separated once we got inside. I’m kicking myself that I didn’t try and find you afterwards. If you’re interested in grabbing a bite some time, reply with what camp you worked at that one summer. If not, no worries. Thanks for keeping us company while we were waiting to get in.”

Any takers?

That’s the spirit.

Girl with Arm Tattoos at Helen DeWitt Reading - m4w

A reader recently anonymously “asked” me a link to alikewise, that new online dating site for people who like books. It’s cute, I guess, but supporting that would be like me linking to Amazon. I insist: The actual bookstore remains your best venue for—first—judging taste, and then retreating to the cold glow of your laptop to post something hopefully winning for them to maybe see and like.

For example, if you were a big Helen DeWitt fan and showed up to see her speak, and a pretty girl with arm tattoos was also a big Helen DeWitt fan and she too showed up to see Helen DeWitt speak, you might post something like this:

You were a girl with tattoos on your forearms and were wearing a gray shirt and jeans. You were at McNally Jackson, listening to Helen DeWitt discuss her book. You were a copy of “The Believer” and “Mojo.” I told my friend that you looked like the idealized girl for the 26-year-old version of me; my friend disagreed and said that you looked pretty idealized for everyone. I had to admit that there was a good chance that he was right.

Would love to find out so I can report back.

Ideal, no?

(With a nod to m. slumbr, who found this before the McNally Jackson Google Alert.)

Amber Alert

Lots of people’ve been hyphenating McNally Jackson lately. No hyphen, you guys. Also, someone on twitter called us Jackson McNally, which I found funnier than I probably should’ve, because it’s not very funny. Anyway, Amber! Where are you! Your Dave Eggers linemate wants to find you!

Amber at McNally-Jackson: Dave Eggers Book Signing - m4w - 22 (SoHo)

You were at the book signing on Saturday the 2nd with two friends; I was the guy behind you in line with the red sweatshirt who gave you the festival schedule. You seemed really smart, cute, and cool in a Greenwich Village kind of way and I’d like to hang out with you some time if you don’t have a boyfriend. Hit me up if you find this and you’re interested and tell me what I said to Eggers or something so I know it’s you. OKAY, AWESOME, BYE!!!

Okay, awesome, bye.
